Free films at the cinema - The Cinema Exhibitors' Association Card confirms that the holder (your child) is entitled to one free ticket for the person accompanying them to the cinema. To apply for the card, your child would need to be in receipt of disability living allowance (DLA) and/or be registered blind. The card costs £5.50 and is valid for 1 year.

Sunderland Youth Development Group & City Equals - The Youth Development Group’s Inclusion Project provides citywide youth provision for young people 13-19 years of age who have physical and/or learning disabilities. The youth clubs run sessions on various nights during the week, while one club also runs a Saturday morning session. Club members are offered a wide range of activities and are actively encouraged to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
During school holidays, in partnership with Services for Disabled Children (Children's Services) and the voluntary sector, the Inclusion Project runs away day breaks. This involves activity days and residential experiences, giving disabled young people opportunities to extend their horizons and interests within a safe environment.

Silksworth Wellness Centre Sensory Room -is a place where disabled children and adults can explore and develop their senses and skills. The room has many different features including soft padded floors and walls, interative equipment which uses sound and lighting, fibre optic curtain and bubble machine.
The facility is open for casual and group bookings of up to 10 people however a brief induction is required in order to show carers the basic use of the equipment. Sessions are 90 minutes duration.
Opening times:
Monday to Friday 8.30am to 7pm - Sat/Sun 8.30am to 3.30pm
Cost per person per session: 1-3 years £1.90 - 4 years and over £2.60 (for concession members).
A concession Life Card can be obtained from the Centre's Receiption with proof of entitlement.

Sunderland Actionnaires Club - allows visually impaired children to experience a range of sport and leisure activities in a safe, structured and fun environment. The club takes place on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month from 10am until 12pm at the Raich Carter Sports Centre in Hendon, Sunderland or in venues in the community. Children and young people who are blind or partially sighted can participate in a whole range of activities including Trampolining, Judo, Football, Basketball, Athletics, Gym Fitness, Swimming, Museum visits and more.
There is no charge for the sessions and the visually impaired children can bring a friend or sibling along with them.
The club is open to children and young people aged 4 - 16 however children aged under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. |

Games - Scope, the UK Disability Charity, has produced a useful document which offers guidance around including disabled children and young people in play. The document 'Games all children can play from a sports bag' can be downloaded here.

Specially adapted tricycles - People's Pedal Power is an initiative to encourage disabled people and children to start cycling. The project has adapted tricycles suitable for people with all disabilities. It is based at Hetton Lyons Country Park and is open Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm. The cost is £3 per hour and pre-booking is essential.

NGC offers an international programme of exhibitions; it is home to the UK's largest art glass making facility for kiln forming and offers glass blowing demonstrations daily. The Edward Lloyd Trust - is a local charity that works with and for people with learning disabilities. They have run successful fund-raising events and through the generosity of our donors have purchased an accessible caravan. Situated on the beautiful and scenic Northumberland Coast, the caravan is only a short drive from the Railway Station and Berwick upon Tweed town centre. The Family Fund - Holiday grants are given for the benefit of the severely disabled child. They must normally be used towards the cost of a family holiday that includes the disabled child. Grants can also be given for outings and day trips where families are unable to take a holiday away from home.
